Don't sweat the cracks. Mine has them on front and back and they are not a problem. I do check my air pressure a lot but it's a good idea to do that anyway. My dealer (who's not interested in selling me parts I don't need) said it's just minor exposure damage. I too have a 1996...maybe it's a model year thing...
